A process for producing hydrogen from a hydrocarbon in a reactor having a selective hydrogen-permeable membrane, in which hydrocarbon and water react in the presence of a catalyst to produce hydrogen, which permeates through the selective hydrogen permeable membrane, wherein the gas hourly space velocity of hydrocarbon over the catalyst, when multiplied by the number of carbon atoms in the hydrocarbon, is maintained at a value of greater than 2000 h^-1.
