1,083,120. Hay wafering. MASSEYFERGUSON Inc. Nov. 30, 1964 [Dec. 30, 1963], No. 48528/64. Heading A2B. Hay to be wafered is delivered between the surfaces of a plurality of compression rolls rotatable about spaces axes and the adjacent surface of a mandrel rotatable about an axis substantially equidistantly spaced from the axes of rotation of the the rolls, at least one of the rolls and/or the mandrel being driven so as to compress the hay between the surfaces of the rolls and about the mandrel so as to form an extrude of compressed hay travelling in the direction of the axis of the mandrel. The extrude may be broken into wafers by means of a knife which is actuated by means of a switch operated by a sensing mechanism when the extrude is sufficiently long. Fig. 2 shows a general view of such an apparatus, hay being fed from hopper 44 to rotating rolls 20 and mandrel 34, the extrude being cut off by knife 60 actuated by switch 56 and sensing means 50. The mandrel is preferably shorter than the rolls, and may be tapered and provided with serrations &c. to improve its gripping power. In a modification, several mandrels may be employed, as in Fig. 9 (not shown).
|
