An engine having a first catalyst (5) placed in a first exhaust path (3a), a second catalyst (6) placed in a second exhaust path (3b) so as to be located on the upstream side of the first catalyst (5), a variable valve train mechanism (11) constructed so that it can vary the amount of lift of first and second exhaust valves (8, 9) from substantially zero to the maximum level, and a lift amount control section for causing the variable valve train mechanism (11) to control the amount of lift of the first and second exhaust valves (8, 9) so that, at least when the engine is started, the amount of exhaust gas passing the second exhaust path (3b) is greater than that passing the first exhaust path (3a). |
