<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel cell system in which electric power of low voltage is generated by a fuel cell and self calorific value of the fuel cell is increased, wherein movement of fuel gas to an air pole is suppressed. <P>SOLUTION: The fuel cell system comprises the fuel cell 10 which generates the electric power by carrying out electrochemical reaction of oxygen with hydrogen, hydrogen supply pressure adjusting means 30d and 33 which can adjust supply pressure of hydrogen supplied to the fuel cell 10 via a hydrogen supply passage 30a, and an electric power generation efficiency adjusting means 18 and 19. The pressure of hydrogen which is supplied to the fuel cell 10 when low voltage of the fuel cell 10 is controlled near 0 V by the electric power generation efficiency adjusting means 18 and 19 is lowered by hydrogen supply pressure adjusting means 30d and 33 than the pressure of hydrogen at the time of usual operation of the fuel cell 10.
