A method and an apparatus for driving a liquid crystal display device are provided to improve image quality of the display device by inserting an insertion frame so that driving frequency of the display device is increased. An apparatus for driving a liquid crystal display device includes an image display unit(102), a data driver(104), a gate driver(106), a data converter(110), and a timing controller(108). The image display unit includes LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) cells, which are formed on regions defined by gate and data lines. The data driver supplies an analog video signal to the data lines. The gate driver supplies a scan pulse to the gate lines. The data converter detects a motion vector from input data, filters the data by using the motion vector, and generates modulation data containing an overshoot and an undershoot at the edges of the image. The timing controller arranges the modulation data and supplies the arranged result to the data driver.
