PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve an apparatus for providing percutaneous access to an internal operative site during a surgical procedure. SOLUTION: An air stream stop valve for introducing an elongate object to the internal part of a patient comprises: a first valve member for defining an internal opening for receiving the elongated object; a flexible membrane defining an aperture substantially aligned with the opening in the first valve member; a second valve member to be coupled to the flexible membrane for moving the membrane between a first shape in which the aperture has having a first area and a second shape in which the aperture has having a second area, where a hole is not equal to that in the first area, in order to receive the elongate object having a different cross-sectional area being sealed.
