<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a birefringent film having a high contrast ratio over a wide range and capable of effectively suppressing a color shift, and a liquid crystal display using the same. <P>SOLUTION: The birefringent film has refractive index anisotropy of formula [1]: nx1≥ny1>nz1 and satisfies formula [2]: 0 nm≤Re1≤100 nm, formula [3]; 50 nm≤Rth1≤500 nm, and formula [4]: 1.00<D1<1.40, wherein nx1, ny1 and nz1 are respective refractive indexes in the directions of the X axis, Y axis and Z axis of the birefringent film; Re1 and Rth1 are respective values defined by formula [5]: Re1=(nx1-ny1)d and formula [6]: Rth1=(nx1-nz1)d, d is the thickness of the film; and D1 is a value defined by formula [7]: D1=Rth1(450 nm)/Rth1(590 nm). <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
