PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet cutting device which can adjust the length of cutting time according to the thickness of sheet bundle to be cut, and can always obtain optimal productivity. SOLUTION: When cutting the sheet, following means are adopted to adjust the cutting stroke of the cutting blade according to the thickness of the sheet bundle. When the sheet cutting blade is moved in the approximately orthogonal direction to the sheet surface between a retreat position, where a sheet cutting means for cutting the sheet bundle is separated away from the sheet, and a sheet cutting position, where the sheet is cut, the retreat position is set to be far in the case of thick sheet bundle and be closed in the case of thin sheet bundle according to the thickness of the sheet bundle. Alternatively, the starting timing of the moving operation for moving from the retreat position where the sheet cutting means for cutting the sheet bundle is separated away from the sheet toward the sheet cutting position where the sheet is cut is started late in the case of thick sheet bundle and earlier in the case of thin sheet bundle according to the thickness of the sheet bundle from the prescribed retreat position.
