An image contrast enhancement apparatus using an adaptive coefficient interpolation method and a method therefor are provided to prevent the flicker phenomenon of an image by adaptively performing contrast correction on the basis of an average luminance value of a current image and a previous image. An average luminance value calculating unit(10) calculates an average luminance value of a current input image. A function determining unit(40) determines a mapping function for contrast enhancement on the basis of the average luminance value of the current input image. An approximating unit(50) approximates the mapping function to an equation of certain degree, and generates an approximation equation corresponding to the current input image. A comparing unit(20) calculates a difference value between the average luminance value of the current input image and an average luminance value of a previous image, and compares the difference value with a certain threshold value. A contrast enhancement coefficient calculating unit(60) adaptively provides weight values to respective coefficients of the approximation equation corresponding to the current input image and respective coefficients of an approximation equation corresponding to the previous image on the basis of the compared result of the comparing unit(20), and calculates coefficient values of a filtering curve for contrast enhancement. A contrast enhancement unit(70) enhances the contrast of the input image by using the filtering curve for enhancing contrast generated by the calculated coefficient values.
