A method of transcribing music 121 produces a transcript 113 which comprises a sequence of symbols that represents the music 121. Data representing sound events (201a-e) is received and a model 112 is accessed to associate the sound events (201a-e) with appropriate transcription symbols. The model 112 comprises transcription symbols and also decision criteria that are used to determine which transcription symbol is appropriate for a particular sound event (210a-e). The model 112 may associate each of the sound events (201a-e) in the music 121 with; a leaf node (504a-h) of a classification tree (500), patterns of activated nodes in a neural net (900), or cluster centres of a cluster model. |
