A bacterium counting method comprises steps (a to b). At step (a), a sample (specimen) to be measured and containing a predetermined species of bacterium (for example, escherichia coli or coliform) is added to a predetermined culture medium (for example, a culture medium used for a specific enzyme ground substance culture medium method. At step (b), the value of the current flowing through the culture medium to which the sample is added is measured at a predetermined temperature and at a predetermined constant voltage by using an oxygen electrode. At step (c), the time elapsed from the start of the measurement at step (b) until the current value which has decreased increases and exceeds a predetermined threshold is measured. At step (d), on the basis of the elapsed time, the initial number of bacteria of the species contained in the sample is counted. ® KIPO & WIPO 2007
