PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display a video image as a video image wherein non-picture portions are reduced, when displaying the video image aspect-converted from an aspect ratio of 4:3 to 16:9 on a display device of 4:3. SOLUTION: A video image indicated by a video signal input from the outside can be displayed on a display device by any arbitrary display method of either a standard size display method or a magnified size display method (S255, S250). In such a case, if an additional video image obtained by adding a non-picture portion where an image is not present, to a video image of an aspect ratio of 4:3 is displayed by the magnified size display method, it becomes a video image of a size protruding a terminal portion of the video image, namely, at least a part of the non-picture portion from a display area of the display device. A region thus protruding from the display area is not displayed by the display device, so that a video image in which non-picture portions are reduced, can be displayed as a result.
