PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a sorting performance of an element in an apparatus for sorting the element according to a size of the plate width along the thickness direction, the element being formed by punching a metal plate for a belt of a stepless speed change device. SOLUTION: The apparatus for sorting the element comprises a conveying path 4 which conveys the element 1, a sorting plate 5 disposed above the conveying path 4 with a predetermined distance for passing the element 1 having a size of the plate width along the thickness direction of a predetermined value or less, a lifting means which raises and lowers the sorting plate 5, a detecting means for detecting the element 1 which is stopped by the sorting plate 5, and a take-off means 6 for taking off the element 1 detected by the detecting means from the conveying path 4, the sorting plate 5 being provided with a contact part 5a which contacts with the conveying path 4.
