A process for producing a fluorescent material which comprises causing base-constituting ingredients for the fluorescent material to undergo a liquid-phase reaction and coprecipitation in the presence of an activator to produce the fluorescent material as a coprecipitation product. The process is characterized in that the base-constituting ingredients in the liquid reaction mixture to be subjected to the liquid-phase reaction have a solubility product of 10<SUP>-17</SUP> to 10<SUP>-27</SUP>. In particular, the process for producing a fluorescent material of a nanometer size improved in luminance and durability can be provided.
