PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image forming apparatus to which various original carrying devices can be connected and which can always execute proper color image forming processing by reading image data while carrying an original and realizing a color decision processing function on the basis of a color decision inhibit signal received from a connected original carrying device. SOLUTION: While an ADF control section 21 carries an original, a read control section 32 of an image forming section 30 reads image data of the original. A first image processing section 333 receiving the read image data outputs a main scanning direction valid image area signal 1 and a subscanning direction valid image area signal 1 to a combination circuit 331. The combination circuit 331 combines the main scanning direction valid image area signal 1, the subscanning direction valid image area signal 1, and the color decision inhibit signal to newly produce a main scanning direction valid image area signal 2 and a subscanning direction valid image area signal 2. A color area decision section 332 carries out color decision processing on the basis of the main scanning direction valid image area signal 2, the subscanning direction valid image area signal 2 and the image data.
