PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize price-reduction by enabling one kind of light receiving array element to deal even in the case where stripe periods are varied due to an aberration (distortion) or the like in an imaging performance of an optical system. SOLUTION: A photoelectric encoder having a scale 10, 64 and a light receiving array element 40, 66 is provided with: the light receiving array element 40 (photo diode array section 42), 66 which is formed by subdividing a light receiving element (photo diode 43) along a measurement direction; and a means (composed of a comparator section 44, a stripe period detecting section 50, a selecting switch section 46 and an amplifier circuit 52) which turns each photo diode (43) on and off in accordance with the period of the stripe to be detected.
