The invention relates to a device for latching a moving element to a fixed element, particularly a seat back of a motor vehicle rear seat, comprised of a part forming a latch, fixed to the moving element or seat back, and of a part forming a catch fixed to the fixed element or vehicle body or vice versa, said latch being comprised of a housing (10) having a hinge pin (11) on which a subassembly (12) is rotationally mounted that has a moving latching hook (13) capable of hooking on the catch, and an indexing element (16) mounted on said pin (11) parallel to the hook (13). Said subassembly (12) self-adjusts by rotating about its pin (11) with regard to the catch (8) according to the position thereof on the vehicle body. The invention is characterized in that the rotating subassembly of the latch also comprises automatic means for compensating for play between the hook (13) and the catch, which are comprised of an elastic recall element (17) acting upon the upper part (13a) of the moving hook (13).
