A system and a method for inputting characters using a mobile terminal are provided to solve a problem that a user should select characters by moving a select bar by repeatedly pressing a shift key causing user inconvenience of inputting characters and taking much time. A mobile terminal(200) includes multiple keys for inputting characters, and when a key for inputting a character is pressed in a character input mode, the mobile terminal transmits a character corresponding to the key through the second communication unit. A navigation system(100) includes the first communication unit for its connection with the mobile terminal(200), receives the character through the first communication unit, and displays it. The first communication unit is a USB(Universal Serial Bus) communication unit.
