OPTICAL FREQUENCY SHIFT KEYING/SINGLE SLIDE-BAND MODULATOR HAVING INTENSITY BALANCING FUNCTION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical modulator capable of suppressing a component which is desirably suppressed by adjusting optical intensity of a modulation signal before it is multiplexed.

SOLUTION: Since signal intensity of components desirably suppressed (a carrier component (f0) and a high order component (e.g. a secondary component (F0±2fm))) of output signals from each sub Mach-Zehnder waveguide are adjusted so as to be nearly same level by an intensity modulator (12) for modulating intensity of the optical signals transmitting through a waveguide part provided in the waveguide part between a multiplexing part of a first sub Mach-Zehnder waveguide (MZA) of a main Mach-Zehnder waveguide (MZC) and a multiplexing part (6) of the main Mach-Zehnder waveguide MZC), when the optical signals from each sub Mach-Zehnder waveguide are multiplexed at the multiplexing part (6), the components (having reverse phases) desirably suppressed can be effectively suppressed.
