The operating process is for an engine (10) whose exhaust region (13) contains at least one catalytic converter (16) with a temperature sensor (17) and a nitrogen oxide sensor (18), and with a reagent to convert nitrogen oxides. The difference in the calculated masses of nitrogen oxides are reported in time sequence. The masses for the differences are stored and evaluated in the production of a reagent signal dependent on the sequence of the results of the evaluation.
