PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To switch an autofluorescent image to a reference image automatically. SOLUTION: An endoscope processor 20 has a reference light source 31R, an excitation light source 31F, a preceding stage signal processing circuit 41, a brightness detecting circuit 43, and a system controller 21. An image pickup device 53 generates fluorescent image signals by emitting excitation light from the excitation light source 31F. The fluorescent image signals are input in the brightness detecting circuit 43 through the preceding stage signal processing circuit 41. The brightness detecting circuit 43 detects the brightness of the fluorescent image. The system controller 21 determines whether the brightness falls below a prescribed threshold value. If the brightness is below the prescribed threshold value, the system controller 21 makes the reference light source 31R emit reference light and also turns off the excitation light of the excitation light source 31F.
