A chuck 100 for use with a manual or powered driver includes a housing, a rotatable drive shaft and a generally cylindrical body 120 with a nose section 121 and a tail section 122. The tail section has an internal cavity 125 formed therein and the nose section has an axial bore formed therein. The body has a first locking surface formed thereon. A nut 110 with a central bore 113 is disposed within the internal cavity and is rotationally coupled to the drive shaft. A plurality of jaws 130 is movably disposed with respect to the body and each of the jaws is in communication with the axial bore. The jaws are operatively coupled to the nut. A sleeve is disposed about the body. The sleeve includes a second locking surface configured to selectively engage and disengage the first locking surface. The body and the sleeve are axially movable with respect to each other between a first position in which the locking surfaces are engaged and a second position in which the locking surfaces are disengaged. The first position prevents rotation of the body relative to the sleeve. Alternative chucks may include a nut or a body that is axially movable with respect to a spindle between a first position and a second position. |
