A brake system includes a master cylinder (11), a slave cylinder (23) and a wheel cylinder (16) for braking a wheel (14). The master cylinder (11) and the slave cylinder (23) are connected via a first (Pa,Pb) and a second (Pf) fluid passage. A shutoff valve (22A) is provided in the first fluid passage (Pa,Pb). The first fluid passage (Pa,Pb) communicates with the slave cylinder (23) at a position in front of an advance limit of a cup seal (65A) of a piston (38A) of the slave cylinder (23). The second fluid passage (Pf) branches from the first fluid passage (Pa,Pb) on a side of the master cylinder (11) relative to the shutoff valve (22A). When the shutoff valve (22A) is closed, stroke loss is automatically minimized from the time the piston (38A) starts to advance to the time brake fluid pressure is generated.
