PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately perform reliability decision whether or not a defocus amount is reliable as the result of focus detection even when a subject image is a low-contrast one and the defocus amount is large. SOLUTION: A pair of luminous fluxes from a subject passing through the different exit pupil positions of a photographic lens 18 is detected by a pair of line sensors 21a and 21b as subject image (image A and image B) signals. In a camera MPU 10, the defocus amount of the photographic lens 18 is calculated based on the respective subject image signals, the tolerance of a first decision element depending on the contrast of the subject image is changed, and also the tolerance of a second decision element depending on the conformity of the subject image is changed in accordance with the defocus amount. Then, whether or not the focus detection depending on the defocus amount is a success is decided in accordance with the result of decision in the first decision element and the second decision element.
