PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pneumatic radial tire equipped with enhanced durability by enhancing the resistance to cutting due to external flaw. SOLUTION: The pneumatic radial tire is equipped with carcass extending toroidally between bead cores embedded in a pair of bead parts and an entangling main belt layer and a tread arranged outside in the tire radial direction of the carcass and consisting of two layers of rubber-lined steel cords intersecting each other. Between the entangling main belt layer and the tread, a protect layer is laid consisting at least of one layer of rubber-lined steel cords, in which the steel cords at least at the outermost of the protect layer are arranged alternately with the S-twist and Z-twist.
