The present invention provides stilbene derived compounds having antineoplastic and/or antimicrobial activity. Preferred compounds of the invention include compounds of the formula (I) wherein R is Dap, Dap-Dil, Dap-Dil-Val, or Dap-Dil-Val-Dov; R₁ is H, OH, or PO₃Na₂; and R₂ and R₃ are jointly -CH₂- or each independently H, OH, CH₃, or PO₃Na₂; and compounds of the formulas (II), (III) and and salts thereof, wherein R and R₁ are independently H or P(O)(OH). The present invention is further directed to methods of inhibiting cancer cell growth and/or microbial growth and compositions for use therewith.
