The fitting has a fitting part (11) rotating relative to another fitting part (9) for the lean adjustment of a backrest of a vehicle seat between multiple usage positions. Third fitting part (14) is pivotable relative to the part (11) for a centric free-pivoting of backrest and lockable with the part (11). The part (14) is fixed in the backrest by locking devices (32, 41) in a force-fit manner. The locking device (41) is supported by a pre-stressed spring (43), which defines a resetting force. The locking device (41) is movable from the locking device (32) upon exceeding the resetting force of the spring. An independent claim is also included for a vehicle seat with a fitting for lean adjustment and free pivoting of the backrest of the seat.
