An apparatus and a method for extracting features of image information are provided to set a plurality of local regions from which features of an image are extracted and thereby improve performance in recognition of the image. A feature point detection unit(100) calculates a curvature value of image information and detects feature points for feature extraction by using the curvature value. A feature extraction unit(110) detects vectors with respect to affine transformation in a plurality of regions centering around the detected feature points and determines a set of the detected vectors as a feature vector. The feature point detection unit includes a filter unit for carrying out Gausian filtering regarding to the image information, a differential operation unit for calculating differential values of the image information and a curvature calculation unit for calculating the curvature value of the image information by using the differential values. |
