Stairlift operating control

The invention discloses an operating control for a stairlift in which the function of determining the direction of movement of the stairlift is separated from the function of effecting movement. The direction of the carriage may be determined from a control switch, a voice activated input or from the last direction of travel of the carriage. Also disclosed is an occupancy sensor such that the carriage is only operable in the presence of a user.
