PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a driving assistance device and a method eliminating the possibility of causing an unnecessary trouble in communication between vehicles by making it possible to send a gratitude message in appropriate timing when the merging (crossing) of one's own vehicle is completed. SOLUTION: A signal including one message signal among a plurality of messages including a concession request message for asking whether or not it is permitted to enter a passage, and a gratitude message for the approval of the concession request message is sent to other vehicle. Also, a message signal is received from the other vehicle. When permission requirements corresponding to the completion of the entry of the one's own vehicle into the passage of the other vehicle are met, the transmission of the gratitude message signal from the one's own vehicle to the other vehicle is permitted.
