The invention relates to a method of objectively determining a binocular visual performance criterion of a human or animal subject and to a device for performing said method. The inventive method comprises the following steps consisting in: objectively measuring the ocular aberrations of each eye (11<SUB>g</SUB>, 11<SUB>d</SUB>); using said measured aberration values to calculate two left and right eye monocular performance criteria (12<SUB>g</SUB>, 12<SUB>d</SUB>), said criteria being characteristic functions respectively of the imaging performance of each left and right eye; and calculating (13) the binocular visual performance criterion of the subject using a summation function for summing said left and right monocular performance criteria.
