PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the placement error of an original at an earlier stage in reading the original. SOLUTION: An image processing apparatus is provided with a scanner board unit (SBU) 11 for reading the image of the original to generate image data, a white paper detection unit (WIU) 12 for detecting whether or not the original is white paper on the basis of the image data generated by the SBU 11, and a liquid crystal touch panel 19 for displaying setting conditions and the like. In the apparatus capable of setting read surface selection modes for reading image on both sides of the original or one side, when the SBU 11 reads a plurality of sheets of the originals continuously, only the leading page is decided by the WIU 12, the liquid crystal touch panel 19 is informed of the image decision result when the original is the white paper, and display related to the detection of the white paper is performed.
