PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical liquid crystal aligning agent which is excellent in characteristics related to after image and image persistence. SOLUTION: The vertical alignment type liquid crystal aligning agent is constructed with an imide polymer composed of≤35 mol% amic acid repeat units and≥75 mol% imide repeat units and contains≥50 mol% units originating from 2,3,5-tricarboxycyclopentylacetic acid dianhydride or 1,3,3a,4,5,9b-hexahydro-5(tetrahydro-2,5-dioxo-3-furanyl)-naphtho[1,2-c]-furan-1,3-diones as units originating from tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride of the repeat units, or≥8 mol% units originating from diaminobenzene with a substituent group such as a 10-20C alkyl group or bis-(aminobenzene) with a 4-40C alicyclic skeleton as units originating from diamine.
