PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact, long-lasting and robust gearshift device. SOLUTION: This gearshift device is provided with a selector lever 2 operable by a user for remotely controlling a transmission of an automobile, biasing means 7 to maintain one end 2a of the selector lever 2 in contact with a contoured surface 8 for providing shifting feeling to the user, and a detecting means having emitting means 9a and receiving means 9b. One of the emitting means 9a and the receiving means 9b is fitted to the end 2a of the selector lever 2 so that position of the end 2a of the selector lever 2 on the contoured surface 8 can be detected.
