PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for mechanical descaling, by which method and apparatus, scales can be excellently removed without causing plastic deformation and breakage of a wire brush even in a hot steel material having bent portions. SOLUTION: In the mechanical descaling method for removing the scales existing on the surface of the hot steel material 1 by pressing rotating brush rolls 10, 20 against the surface of the hot steel material 1, load cells 13, 23 measure the pressing forces of the brush rolls 10, 20 against the surface of the hot steel material 1, and control the positions of the brush rolls 10, 20 by moving the brush rolls 10, 20 forward and backward with respect to the hot steel material 1 so that the pressing forces of the brush rolls 10, 20 against the surface of the hot steel material 1 become constant. A control unit 40 controls the pressing forces of the brush rolls 10, 20 to be constant based on the results measured by the load cells 13, 23. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
