PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain power saving, without causing deterioration in the image quality, while reading image signal at a driving frequency that is optimal for an imaging element. SOLUTION: A timing generator 15 sets a period of time for one frame during which pixel signals are read from a CCD 12, to a first period of time or to a second period of time longer than the first period of time. The timing generator 15 outputs specific timing signals (vertical pulse and horizontal pulse) (at optimal drive frequency) with respect to a vertical driver 16 and a horizontal driver 17, regardless of setting of the frame term, and stops outputting the timing signals, when it is discriminated that timing signals have been outputted for a period of time required for reading pixel signals corresponding to a single frame.
