PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound improving adsorbability for hair or skin possessed by conventional cationic polymers, improving weakness of conditioning effects during rinsing when formulated with a hair treating composition, imparting soft setting effects without heating after drying, having good shampooing removability, eliminating a tense feeling and dry feeling for the skin and reducing a sticky feeling and a slimy feeling when formulated with a hair cosmetic composition. SOLUTION: The cationically modified karaya gum is obtained by substituting a part of hydroxy groups contained in the karaya gum with specific quaternary nitrogen-containing groups.
