PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a refrigerator with a compressor placed at an upper part to enlarge the internal volume of a storage chamber in a lowermost part without degrading the storage volume and storage performance of a storage chamber in an uppermost part. SOLUTION: The compressor is stored in a part recessed in stepped shape behind a top face of a refrigerator body 1, and the upper end of a machine chamber cover 35 is located above a first top face part 33. The storage volume of a freezing chamber 31 in the lowermost part is thereby increased to enhance storage performance, and the compressor 19 and a second top face part 34 can be arranged at the upper part together with the machine chamber cover 35 to reduce a margin to project to a refrigerating chamber 30 in the uppermost part. The void space of the refrigerator can be utilized well while making it hard for a user to feel a sense of oppression in appearance without degrading storage volume and storage performance.
