A drive axle assembly (10) is provided in which the differential cross-shaft (24) supporting the differential gears (26,28) is driven directly by the ring gear (50) . The assembly (10) reduces loading on the differential case (22) to which the ring gear (50) is attached thereby enabling the use of low capacity joints between the ring gear (50) and differential case (22) and/or a lighter differential case.
