PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-soluble amphiphatic copolymer having good hydrophilicity and high adsorption ability, and capable of exhibiting excellent dispersibility, even under a high hardness condition, to provide use of the same, and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: This water-soluble amphiphatic copolymer is given by copolymerizing a monomer component which contains a cationic monomer (a), an anionic monomer (b), and an unsaturated polyalkylene glycol-based monomer (c) as essential ingredients, wherein the monomer (b) comprises a carboxy group-containing monomer and/or a sulfonic acid group-containing monomer (d), and the monomer (b) is contained in an amount of more than 50 mol% based on a total amount of 100 mol% of the monomers (a), (b), and (c) when the monomer (b) comprises only the carboxy group-containing monomer, or at least one kind of the monomers (a), (d), and (c) is contained in an amount of not more than 30 mol% based on the total amount of 100 mol% of the monomers (a), (d), and (c) when the monomer (b) contains the sulfonic acid group-containing monomer (d).
