PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer and a lens detection method accurately detecting the lens pitch of a lens sheet. SOLUTION: The printer 10 printing on the lens sheet 12, wherein a plurality of lenses 12A1 are arranged, is equipped with a printing head 32 ejecting ink droplets. The printer also includes: a carriage 30 moving in the main scanning direction driven by a carriage motor 22; a light emitting part 42 emitting light toward the lens sheet 12; a light receiving part 43 which is fitted to the carriage 30, receives the light passing through the lens sheet 12 or the light passing through the lens sheet 12 again after reflecting thereon and outputs a detection signal corresponding to the intensity of the light; direction limiting means 511, 512 which are fitted to the light incident side of a light receiving part 43 and limit the advance direction of the incident light; and a control means 100 which reflects the detection signal output from the light receiving part 43 and controls/drives the carriage motor 22.
