The device has a unit for detecting a residual current (1,41) in an electrical power supply system (40) and a network isolation unit (20). The unit for detecting a residual current has a device for accurately acquiring the residual current in respect of its signal shape and that can be coupled to the supply. A residual current analysis unit (100) for spectral characterization of the residual current is connected to the isolation unit. An independent claim is also included for a method of monitoring residual currents in power supply systems.
