PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve productivity of a terephthalic acid diester in the production of a terephthalic acid diester from terephthalic acid and a monohydric alcohol. SOLUTION: The method for producing a terephthalic acid diester comprises using a monohydric alcohol in an amount less than the stoichiometric amount to form the terephthalic acid diester based on the amount of terephthalic acid.
