<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for stably deriving an area as to a method for finding the area of an observed object. <P>SOLUTION: A histogram is calculated on image information in at least a partial domain of an image (steps 101 and 102). Then, based on the number of projecting parts of the histogram, an approximate expression on the histogram is calculated by using a plurality of probability distribution functions (steps 103 and 104).
