PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce or eliminate a careless unlocking during the start of an engine and the occurrence of hammering sound and abnormal noise by the unlocking. SOLUTION: This valve timing control device changes the rotating phases or the valve timing of a housing 1 rotatingly driven by a crankshaft and a vane 5 integrally rotating with the camshaft 4 by switching between supply oil pressures in an advance-angle side hydraulic passage 24 and a retard-angle side hydraulic passage 25 by a hydraulic control valve 32. The valve timing control device comprises a lock mechanism 12 capable of locking the housing 1 and the vane 2 in predetermined phases and unlocking them when a predetermined oil pressure is fed to an unlock hydraulic pressure chamber 23 communicating with the passage 25 (24).
