An area extracting device (1) for extracting an area of interest corresponding to a subject stably and accurately comprises a smoothing section (7) for creating a smoothed image by smoothing an input image, an initial area detecting section (8) for detecting an initial area including at least a part of the subject from the smoothed image according to the smoothed pixel values which the pixels in the smoothed image have, an area transforming section (9) for judging whether or not a contour adjoining pixel is a pixel of the area of interest constituting the area of interest on the basis of the smoothing pixel value which the contour adjoining pixel in the initial area has, varying at least either the size or shape of the initial area according to the judgment result, and shaping the transformed area, and an area integrating section (10) for detecting adjoining areas formed by adjoining transformed areas and shaping the area of interest by integrating the adjoining transformed areas according to the feature values indicating the features of the adjoining transformed areas among the adjoining areas. |
