PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photoelectric encoder having a structure wherein a light emitting element or a light receiving element is hardly fouled. SOLUTION: When a code strip is inserted into a through-hole 2c of a support 2 and moved, light from the light emitting element 3 enters the light receiving element 4 intermittently through a plurality of slits formed on the code strip. The moving position of the code strip or the like can be determined based on a light-receiving output from the light receiving element 4 at that time. A clearance between the code strip and the through-hole 2c is extremely narrowed to be 0.1 mm. Hereby, the code strip is moved in the through-hole 2c with almost no deviation. Each member such as the light emitting element 3, a lens 3a or the light receiving element 4 is not projected into the through-hole 2c. Hereby, the code strip can be moved smoothly in the through hole 2c. Consequently, the code strip is not brought into contact with each member, and even if the code strip is fouled, the fouling does not adhere to each member. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
