PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable wavelength light source element for electrically varying the wavelength by integrating an optical amplifier, a beam controller and a recess diffraction grating into a single substrate. SOLUTION: The variable wavelength light source element applies electrical signals to two electrodes in the beam controller for controlling a beam path. The controlled beam path varies the oscillation wavelength by changing the incidence angle of the diffraction grating. In this way, since the wavelength is varied electrically, it has the advantage that it is structurally stable and its wavelength varying speed is high. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
