PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent irregularity of the posture of a binder and to eliminate the possibility of a binding fault, in regard to the binder intended to be used for a binding machine which mainly conducts mechanical binding. SOLUTION: Plane portions 22 are formed on the outer peripheral surface side of the region of one or a plurality of ring parts 13 of the binder 11b where the parts intersect a backbone part perpendicularly, and the binding machine is so constituted that the plane portions 22 of the binder come into contact with a plane table formed in a binder holding member of the binding machine on the occasion when the binder holding member grasps the binder. Since the plane portions of the binder come into contact with the plane table of the binder holding member on the occasion when this member grasps the backbone part, the binder is held in a state that it can not tilt or rotate, and can be subjected to binding in the prescribed posture in the binding machine and thus the possibility of the fitting fault due to the tilt of the posture of the binder is eliminated.
