PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gate switch which can respond at high speed, and materialize polarization independence by using an etalon structure and not using a temperature controller. SOLUTION: The etalon type gate switch 101 is equipped with: a fixed light input port 102 through which light is input; an etalon 103 which is located posterior to the light input port 102, contains a dielectric crystal having a cubic crystal structure, a quadratic electro-optic effect, and spatially distributed phase transition temperature; a fixed light output port 104 which is located posterior to the etalon 103 and into which light emitted from the etalon 103 is input; and a position varying means which makes the position of the dielectric crystal varied according to variation of temperature in such a way that a difference of temperature between the temperature of the gate switch and the phase transition temperature of a region of the dielectric crystal through which light input to the dielectric crystal passes is always kept nearly constant on variation of temperature.
